Advanced Komodo Diving Trips Castle Rock, Shotgun & Current-Swept Pinnacles

A submerged seamount with a shallow top and deeper terraces, dived between roughly 15 and 40 metres. When the tide runs, Castle Rock is the definitive washing-machine dive: currents range from strong to very strong, and the standard plan is a negative entry — drop straight down with no surface pause — followed by a controlled descent to the up-current side, where you set a reef hook and watch the show. White-tip and grey reef sharks patrol the edge of the current line, giant trevally hunt through schooling fusiliers, and mobulas or dolphins pass through in season. Operators typically require Advanced Open Water plus 20–50 logged dives with prior current and drift experience, and we hold to that.

A rocky pinnacle that breaks the surface at low tide, with surrounding plateaus dived from about 5 to 35+ metres. Crystal Rock’s current is medium to very strong, but the real challenge is its behaviour: the flow splits around the pinnacle and forms eddies, and the topography can make it trickier to read than Castle Rock even at similar speeds. Your reward is some of the best visibility in the park, soft-coral cover, pygmy seahorses for sharp-eyed divers, schooling jacks, reef sharks and the occasional manta or eagle ray fly-by. Advanced certification and solid strong-current experience are required.

The park’s pure adrenaline dive: a channel run through a sandy “cauldron” that then fires you through a shallow gap — the Shotgun — at 5 to 30 metres. Currents here can be very strong, with intense horizontal jets and vertical components, which is why this site is dived only on specific tidal phases; on the wrong phase we simply do not put divers in. Most operators ask for 30–50 logged dives and confident drift skills, and so do we. Between the jets you get schooling trevallies, sweetlips, reef sharks, sometimes mantas using the channel, and superb coral gardens in the shallows for the final stretch.

A steep, compact pinnacle rising from deep water, dived from 5 to about 35 metres, and pound for pound one of the fishiest sites in Indonesia. The current is medium to strong and it swirls, with down-currents possible on the edges of the pinnacle — so the dive is worked in zig-zags on the protected lee side, entry timed to slack or a manageable phase. Expect a wall of anthias, fusiliers and surgeonfish, reef sharks and turtles at close range, and pristine hard coral. Advanced Open Water, drift experience and genuinely good buoyancy control are the entry ticket; this is not a site where we can carry a struggling diver.
