Komodo has a reputation for ripping currents, and at the famous northern pinnacles that reputation is deserved. But the park is not one uniform washing machine: the central corridor holds a string of sheltered reefs and gentle drift sites that sit comfortably within Open Water limits, and that is where a fun diving day trip spends its time.

What a Komodo Fun Diving Day Trip Looks Like

The format is simple. You meet at the harbour in Labuan Bajo in the morning, the boat runs about 60–90 minutes into the central park, and you complete two or three dives with surface intervals, snacks, and a hot lunch on board between them. Most guests are back in town by mid-to-late afternoon.

Every dive is guided. Your guide briefs each site, times the entry around the tide so you dive it at its calmest window, and handles navigation underwater — your only job is to enjoy the reef and watch your gauge. Certified, Not Extreme: Why the Route Matters

The phrase we use with guests is “certified, not extreme.” Fun diving in Komodo does not mean being thrown into Castle Rock or Shotgun on a running tide — those are advanced sites where operators typically require an Advanced Open Water card, drift experience and a healthy logbook. A fun dive day deliberately routes around them.

Instead, the itinerary is built from central Komodo sites chosen for manageable conditions: shallow-to-moderate depths, gentle or absent current, and reliable marine life. Water temperature in the central park sits around 27–29°C most of the year and visibility typically runs 15–25 metres, so conditions are forgiving even for divers whose last trip was a while ago. You get the Komodo highlights — turtles, reef fish in dense schools, and a genuine chance at reef mantas — without the advanced-site stress.

What is included

The Classic Central Komodo Route

Exact sites depend on tide and season, but a typical certified-diver day is built from three anchors. Each one earns its place for a different reason.

Siaba Besar — the calm warm-up full of turtles

Siaba Besar is a sheltered reef slope and coral garden in roughly 5–18 metres, generally calm enough that dive centres across Labuan Bajo use it as a check-dive site. That makes it the natural first dive of the day: sort your weighting, settle your buoyancy, and let your guide watch how everyone dives before the boat moves on. Manta Point (Karang Makassar) — gentle drift, big animals

Karang Makassar, better known as Manta Point, is the centrepiece of the day: a long, shallow rubble-and-sand reef in about 8–18 metres, dived as a gentle-to-moderate drift along a chain of coral bommies that act as cleaning stations for reef manta rays. Crucially, the site is accessible to Open Water divers — your guide simply lets the current carry the group past the stations. Indonesia declared its waters a manta sanctuary in 2014, and Manta Point remains the most reliable central-Komodo site for reef manta encounters, along with turtles and the occasional passing shark. Tatawa Besar — the soft coral drift finish

Tatawa Besar rounds out the day with colour: a sloping reef draped in soft corals, dived as an easy drift while fusiliers and anthias swarm the slope. What Is Included in a Fun Dive Trip

Not included: Komodo National Park entrance and diving fees, charged per person per day by the park authority and paid separately (see our park fees guide), plus dive computer rental and crew gratuities.

A certified dive guide leads a small group — we aim for around four divers per guide or fewer, matched by experience level.

Certification Requirements: Who Can Join

The minimum requirement for a fun diving day trip on this central route is an Open Water certification (PADI Open Water Diver, SSI Open Water Diver, or an equivalent entry-level card from any recognised agency). Bring your certification card or a digital copy, and your logbook if you have one.

Open Water divers can dive Siaba Besar, Manta Point and Tatawa Besar comfortably — the route was chosen precisely so that a standard 18-metre certification covers it.

The refresher. If you have not been underwater in a year or more, a refresher scuba session in Labuan Bajo is the smartest money you will spend. It is a short, low-pressure skills review — typically run in calm, shallow water at a site like Siaba Besar — that rebuilds your buoyancy and mask skills before the boat heads to Manta Point. Divers who refresh first use less air, stay more relaxed in the drift, and simply see more.

Nitrox for repetitive diving. If you are certified for enriched air and plan to dive two or three tanks a day for several days, diving nitrox in Komodo is worth the upgrade: longer no-decompression limits on repetitive dives and shorter surface intervals, exactly what the central route’s 8–18 metre profiles reward. Not nitrox certified? The course can usually be added alongside your fun dives — ask when booking.

Best Time for Fun Diving in Komodo

The central route dives well most of the year. The April–November dry season is the prime window, with the calmest seas and best visibility in April–June and September–November; December–March is wetter but the central sites remain diveable on most days, and the park is at its quietest. Can Open Water divers do fun diving in Komodo?

Yes. The standard route — Siaba Besar, Manta Point (Karang Makassar) and Tatawa Besar — sits within Open Water depth limits and manageable current; Manta Point itself is a gentle drift in roughly 8–18 metres. Advanced certification only becomes necessary for strong-current northern sites like Castle Rock or Batu Bolong, which fun dive day trips do not visit.

How many dives do you do on a Komodo day trip?

Two or three, depending on the trip you book. A 2-tank day covers two sites with lunch between; a 3-tank day adds a third site on the way home. Three tanks is the better value per dive and the most common choice among divers visiting specifically to dive.

Will I see manta rays on a fun dive trip?

No operator can guarantee wildlife, but Manta Point at Karang Makassar is the most reliable central-Komodo site for reef manta encounters thanks to its chain of cleaning stations — and Indonesian waters have been a designated manta sanctuary since 2014. Your guide positions the group along the bommies where mantas are most likely to pass.

What if I have not been diving for a few years?

You can still join — just add a refresher first. A short skills session in calm water rebuilds your comfort before the boat dives, and most divers are surprised how quickly it comes back. Mention your last dive date when you book.

Is diving equipment included, and can I bring my own?
