A scuba refresher in Labuan Bajo is a half-day program for certified divers who have not been underwater in 12 months or more: a short theory recap, a skill review in calm, shallow water, and an optional guided check dive at Siaba Besar before you take on Komodo’s stronger sites. If your last dive was a while ago, this is the single best investment you can make in your Komodo trip — because Komodo’s currents are not the place to be remembering how your gear works.
This page covers the format, who genuinely needs one, pricing, and how it fits a multi-day itinerary. Prefer to ask a human? Message us on WhatsApp with your last dive date and we will give you a straight answer.
Why Komodo Is Not the Place to Rediscover Your Skills
Komodo National Park rewards divers like almost nowhere else in Indonesia, but its signature sites are genuinely demanding. Castle Rock, Crystal Rock, Shotgun and Batu Bolong can all run strong to very strong currents — up to 5–7 knots when the tides push hard — with down-currents and up-currents thrown in for good measure. Operators typically want Advanced Open Water certification and 20–50 logged dives before putting guests on these sites, and for good reason.
Rusty skills show up at the worst moments. Fumbling a mask clear on a calm reef is embarrassing; fumbling it while hooked into the current at a north Komodo pinnacle is a real problem for you and your guide. Buoyancy drift, fast air consumption, and hesitation with your BCD controls are all normal after a year out of the water, and all of them are fixable in one relaxed morning. We cover the broader risk picture honestly in our guide to whether Komodo diving is dangerous; the short version is that preparation is what separates a thrilling dive from a stressful one.
The Half-Day Refresher Format
The refresher runs in one morning or one afternoon, so it costs you half a day of your holiday, not a full one. It follows the structure of the PADI ReActivate / Scuba Review approach: knowledge first, then skills, then confidence.
Part 1: Short Theory Recap (45–60 minutes)
No classroom marathon. Your instructor walks you through the points that decay with time: dive planning and no-decompression limits, air management, hand signals, equalization, and how to handle what Komodo can present — currents that change mid-dive, negative entries, staying close to your guide. You also review your gear setup piece by piece, which matters if you are renting equipment you have never used before.
Part 2: Skill Review in Calm, Shallow Water (60–90 minutes)
You then get in the water somewhere flat and protected and run the core skills at your own pace: regulator recovery and clearing, mask flood and clear, alternate air source use, controlled buoyancy checks, fin pivots and hovering, and a proper weight check. Nothing is rushed and nothing is a test — the goal is that each skill goes from “I think I remember this” to automatic. Most divers are surprised how fast it comes back; muscle memory is real, it just needs one session to wake up.
Part 3 (Optional but Recommended): Guided Check Dive at Siaba Besar
The best version of the refresher finishes with a real dive on a real reef, and central Komodo happens to have the perfect site for it.
Your Check Dive: Siaba Besar, Turtle City
Siaba Besar is the site Labuan Bajo dive professionals use as a check dive for a reason. It is a gentle reef slope and coral garden in roughly 5–18 metres of water, currents are generally calm, and the marine life is anything but boring — this is one of the highest-density turtle sites in the park, with healthy coral and easy photography conditions. Water temperature in central Komodo sits around 27–29°C most of the year, so you can focus on your trim instead of shivering.
Diving Siaba Besar as your first dive back does two things. It lets your guide watch you in the water and tailor the rest of your trip honestly — solid buoyancy means you are cleared for ambitious sites sooner. And it turns the refresher into an actual fun dive with turtles rather than an exercise. From there, the natural next step is one of our guided Komodo fun diving trips, working up through moderate drift sites toward the big-name pinnacles as your comfort returns.
Do You Need a Refresher? An Honest Self-Assessment
Certification never expires, but skills do. Ask yourself these questions honestly — no dive professional is judging you, and every one of us has needed a refresher at some point:
- Has it been 12 months or more since your last dive? If yes, book the refresher. This is the standard industry threshold and Komodo is not the destination to test it.
- Fewer than 20 logged dives total? Even a shorter gap matters when your base experience is thin. A refresher plus a couple of easy fun dives builds the log and the confidence together — see our guide on minimum dive requirements for Komodo sites.
- Could you assemble your gear right now without prompting? If you hesitated, that is your answer.
- Can you recall your safe ascent rate, safety stop depth, and low-air signal instantly? These need to be reflexes, not memories.
- Was your last diving in calm, easy conditions only? Divers whose experience is entirely warm quarry lakes or gentle resort reefs benefit from the current-management briefing even if their gap is short.
If you answered “yes” to the first question or wobbled on any of the others, do the refresher on day one. If you are fully current and experienced, skip it and browse our Komodo diving day trips instead — we will still do a standard check dive on your first outing, as every responsible operator here does.
Refresher and Fun Diving Bundles
Most divers who book a refresher pair it with two days of fun diving, which is the sweet spot: day one rebuilds skills at Siaba Besar and a second calm site, days two and three step up to manta sites and moderate drifts. All prices below are indicative starting rates per person and are confirmed when you book, since group size, season and equipment needs affect the final quote.
| Option | Duration | What’s Included | Indicative Price |
|---|---|---|---|
| Scuba Refresher (pool/confined water only) | Half day | Theory recap, full skill review, gear rental | from USD 95 |
| Refresher + Siaba Besar check dive | Full day | Theory, skills, 2 boat dives incl. guided reef dive, lunch, gear | from USD 165 |
| Refresher + 2 days fun diving | 3 days | Half-day refresher, then 2 day-trips (up to 6 dives), guide, lunch, gear | from USD 390 |
| Private refresher with dedicated instructor | Half day | One-on-one theory and skills, flexible schedule | on request |
Komodo National Park entrance and diver fees are charged separately at published park rates. If you are planning four or more days in the water, our multi-day Komodo diving packages usually work out better value than booking day by day — mention the refresher when you enquire and we will fold it into the package price.
Starting Your Trip in Bali? Refresh Early
A lot of our guests fly into Bali first, spend a few days there, then continue to Labuan Bajo. If that is your route, consider doing your refresher at the start of the holiday rather than the end of it — arriving in Labuan Bajo already current means your very first Komodo day can be a proper diving day. Our Bali to Komodo diving package is built around exactly this flow: easy warm-up diving on the Bali side, flights and logistics handled, then straight into Komodo’s reefs with your skills already sharp.
Ground logistics in Labuan Bajo are easy to bolt on. Airport pickups, hotel transfers and private cars for the land days of your trip can be arranged through Komodo Luxury’s luxury transport service in Labuan Bajo, so the only thing you need to think about on dive mornings is coffee and your logbook.
When to Come and How to Book
The refresher itself runs year-round in calm, protected water. For the fun diving that follows, the prime window is April through November, with the most settled conditions April–June and September–November — our Komodo diving seasons guide breaks it down month by month.
Booking is simple: message us on WhatsApp or email sales@komodoluxury.com with your certification level, roughly how many dives you have logged, and the date of your last dive. We will confirm whether a refresher makes sense for you, hold your preferred date, and suggest a fun-diving progression that matches your comfort level. Bring your certification card (or your e-card app login) and, if you have it, your logbook.
Frequently Asked Questions
How long does the scuba refresher in Labuan Bajo take?
Half a day for the theory and skill review — typically about three hours in total. If you add the Siaba Besar check dive, plan on a full day, since it runs as part of a normal two-dive boat trip with lunch on board.
Do I get a new certification card after the refresher?
The refresher is not a new certification and your existing card remains valid. What you get is restored competence, a note in your logbook, and an instructor’s honest read on which Komodo sites you are ready for. Divers who complete a formal PADI ReActivate program can request an updated replacement card; ask us when booking if that matters to you.
Can I skip the refresher and just do an easy first dive?
If your gap is under a year and your skills are solid, yes — every first outing includes a check dive at a calm site anyway. Past 12 months, most operators in town (ours included) will ask for the refresher first. It protects you, your buddy and your guide.
I was certified years ago and have under 10 dives. Is a refresher enough for Komodo?
A refresher will get you comfortably back in the water, and central Komodo has beautiful calm sites — Siaba Besar, Manta Point’s gentle drifts — that suit exactly your profile. The advanced pinnacles will need more logged dives and ideally an Advanced Open Water course; read our honest take on whether beginners can dive Komodo for a site-by-site picture.
Is rental gear included in the refresher price?
Yes — the indicative prices above include full equipment rental. If you bring your own gear, tell us when booking and we will adjust the quote. Either way, the refresher includes a full gear-assembly review, which is worth doing even with your own kit if it has been sitting in a cupboard for a year.
What if the refresher shows I need more than one session?
It happens occasionally, and it is nothing to be embarrassed about. Your instructor will simply recommend a second confined-water session or an extra easy guided dive before you move to current sites — far better than a drift dive you are not ready for.
Ready to shake the rust off? Send us a WhatsApp message with your last dive date and we will take it from there — or email sales@komodoluxury.com for a full quote on a refresher-plus-fun-diving itinerary. One relaxed morning at Siaba Besar, and Komodo is yours again.
