How a Komodo Dive & Stay Package Works

The rhythm is simple. Each dive day starts with a hotel pickup and a short drive to Labuan Bajo harbor, where your speedboat departs in the morning for Komodo National Park. You complete two to three guided boat dives with surface intervals on board, then return to the harbor by late afternoon. Evenings are entirely yours: sunset drinks on Bukit Sylvia, seafood at the night market, or a quiet dinner at your hotel with a laptop and full signal.

Certified divers join our guided Komodo fun diving trips in small groups matched by experience level, so a newly certified Open Water diver is never dropped onto an advanced current site. Non-divers and snorkelers can join the same boat on most central-park days, which is one of the quiet advantages of this format over a dedicated dive liveaboard.

You get seasick

Sleeping at anchor in a swell is the most common reason guests abandon a liveaboard mid-trip. Here, you are on the water only during the day.

All packages include guided dives with tanks and weights, park-day boat transport, hotel–harbor transfers and lunch on board. Komodo National Park entrance and diver fees are payable separately, as they are set by the park authority and change periodically. The 3D2N format suits a long weekend or stopover; the 5D4N version is the one we recommend to photographers, because four dive days mean repeat visits to manta cleaning stations under different tide states.

The Dive Sites You Actually Reach on Day Trips

Here is the part many booking pages blur: a day boat from Labuan Bajo covers the central park superbly and the north well, but it does not cover everything. The good news is that the central sites are not a consolation prize — they include some of the best diving in Indonesia.

Manta Point (Karang Makassar) is the most reliable reef manta site in central Komodo, a long shallow drift at roughly 8–18 meters over rubble and cleaning-station bommies. Currents are gentle to moderate, which makes it accessible to Open Water divers and even snorkelers on the right day. Siaba Besar — "Turtle City" is calmer still, a 5–18 meter coral garden with an unusually high turtle density, and it is where we run check dives on day one. Tatawa Besar adds soft-coral slopes, and Batu Bolong — a compact pinnacle packed with fish life from 5 to 35 meters — is the step up for Advanced divers comfortable with swirling current.

On fast-boat days we also run north to Castle Rock and Crystal Rock for experienced divers. These are genuine advanced sites — strong to very strong currents, negative entries, reef-hook technique — and we schedule them around slack tide with an Advanced certification and drift experience as prerequisites. Dry-season visibility in the north commonly reaches 20–30 meters.

What a day boat rarely reaches is the far south: Manta Alley, Cannibal Rock and Horseshoe Bay sit at the opposite end of the park, with cooler 22–25°C upwelling water from July to September. We are direct about this because for some divers it is the deciding factor.

Daily Logistics: Transfers and Timing

Every package includes airport pickup on arrival day, daily hotel–harbor transfers, and airport drop-off at the end. Morning pickups are early — briefing happens before the fleet departs — and boats are generally back in Labuan Bajo by mid-to-late afternoon, depending on the site plan and sea state.

Two planning notes before you book flights. First, we schedule your final dives to respect the standard pre-flight surface interval — that is why a 5D4N itinerary has four dive days, not five. Second, tide tables decide which sites run on which days, so we build your site plan around your dates rather than promising a fixed list months ahead. That flexibility is how you end up at Manta Point on a favorable tide instead of a mediocre one.

Our plain recommendation: if the south-park sites are must-dives, or you want four dives a day with night diving, book a liveaboard — we run those too. Extend the Trip: Start in Bali

Most guests reach Labuan Bajo on the short flight from Bali, and many fold the two into one holiday — a few days of Bali first, then the dive block in Komodo. If that is your shape of trip, our Bali to Komodo diving package handles the connection end to end: flights guidance, transfers on both islands, and the same dive and stay structure once you land.

On timing: the dry season from April to November is the prime window for Labuan Bajo diving, with April–June and September–November offering the best overall mix of calm seas and visibility. December to March is wetter and windier in the north, but central sites still run and the park is at its quietest — a fair trade for travelers on fixed dates.

Do I need an Advanced certification for a Komodo dive and stay package?

No. Open Water divers are well served by the central sites — Manta Point, Siaba Besar, Tatawa Besar — where currents are gentle to moderate. Advanced certification and drift experience open up Batu Bolong, Castle Rock and Crystal Rock; an Advanced course can be woven into a 4- or 5-day package.

Can my non-diving partner join the boat?

Yes, on most central-park days. Snorkelers can enter the water at manta and turtle sites when conditions allow, and on other days we can arrange land tours — Padar trekking, Komodo dragon visits, island hopping — so both of you have a full itinerary.

Will I actually see mantas on a day trip?

Manta Point (Karang Makassar) is the most reliable reef manta site in central Komodo and sits comfortably within day-trip range, with cleaning and feeding behaviour observed year-round. No honest operator guarantees sightings on a given day, which is exactly why the 4- and 5-day packages exist: repeat visits across different tides raise your odds substantially.

What if I get seasick even on day boats?

Day crossings are shorter and in daylight, when seasickness is easiest to manage, and dry-season seas from April to November are generally calm. If you are highly sensitive, tell us and we will bias your itinerary toward the closer central sites with shorter crossings.

Is the Wi-Fi in Labuan Bajo good enough to work remotely?

In town, yes — hotel and cafe Wi-Fi plus mobile coverage are dependable enough for evening calls and normal remote work. Inside the park during the day, expect little to no signal, so schedule meetings for evenings after your return.
